This is my favorite - strong colors and strokes. Reminds me of Van Gogh's "sunflowers."

I am a big fan of Lola Cons! And I am really impressed by her beautiful paintings especially the flowers. One time I sent her a sunflower photo and she easily painted the photo and gave the painting to me. View the sunflower painting.

My friend who lives in the US usually posts photos of her flowers in her garden at FB. I download them and send them to Lola Cons for her painting hobby. This time I downloaded a photo of a "day lily" from Elsie's photos. Elsie says that she will buy Lola's painting when she finishes the project. Here is Lola busy painting the day lily flower. Amazing Lola at 89+ yrs old!

Lola Cons loves painting flowers. Remember her paintings which I dubbed "Flores de Mayo." Recently, Lola Cons has ventured into painting landscapes. When I saw this painting of a church, the strokes and colors reminds me of Van Gogh's landscape paintings. Posted below are some of her landscape paintings - a mountain and a waterfall.

Flores de Mayo: Flower Paintings of Lola Cons

Lola Conching Maglalang aka "Lola Cons" loves painting flowers. I sent her photos of flowers like the sunflower, hibiscus or gumamela, orchids and a rose. After a week, she completed painting the flower photos. Despite her age (88 yrs old), she can easily paint a flower using acrylic or pastel. Most of these paintings were completed just last May 2011. So I dubbed these gallery of flower paintings as "Flores de Mayo."

Lola Conching - The Master Painter

 I like sunflowers. Whenever I see sunflowers like those planted along the University Avenue at UP Diliman every March just before their graduation rites, I remember Vincent Van Gogh's painting of sunflowers (See image at the left).

Remember Lola Cons, my 88 year old auntie who developed a passion for painting just last year? She attended painting lessons at UP with young and not so old classmates. She was the oldest then at 87 years old but come 2011 a much older lola attended the session breaking her record. Well, I sent her a photo of a sunflower (downloaded from the internet) and asked her to paint it. After a few weeks, she completed her painting of the sunflower. Her apo, Peer,  also a painting enthusiast, painted the same photo. Lola's are more expressive. Her painting has the similar rough strokes of Van Gogh which expresses passion and emotion. I love the "Sunflower" painted by Lola Cons. It brightens our house! :-)

Lola Cons' Painting

It's not too late to start a hobby like painting and sketching. This is what "Lola Cons" has demonstrated. "Lola Cons" is Consolacion Coronel Maglalang, our aunt and my kids lola, who was born in 1923 and now 87 years old.

She was enrolled by her daughter, Liza, in a 10-day session of art at UP last year (2010). The sessions include sketching and painting using various types of media (water color, pastel, pencil). Because of her age, she was given a discount by her instructor. After only a few sessions, "Lola Cons" showed her talent and skill in art.

"Lola Cons" works consist mostly of flowers and still life using water color and pastel. Her works are indeed extraordinary considerng her age. Some of her "master pieces" were given for free (like the one in the photo above which was given to my sister who lives in the US) and some of them were bought by friends and relatives. It's really a marvel to see Lola Cons' effortless creativity. In art, age doesn't matter. What matters is that art ages. I believe Lola Cons works will be priceless.
