A Trip to Tanay, Rizal

A view of Laguna De Bay
Holy Week is a time for reflection and vacation for the family. An overnight trip at Tanay, Rizal on Holy Thursday was what we did. Going to Tanay from Manila is very convenient because the roads are smooth and well-paved. On the way, we had lunch at Paseo - Rizal, an art gallery and restaurant. Lunch of sinigang na ulo, fried tilapia and sizzling gambas filled our hnugry tummies. The food was great and the ambience was cool but the loud music from the karaoke-style singers was a little irritating. It would be better if soft and relaxing instrumental music be played instead.

Paseo-Rizal is both an art gallery and a restaurant
Next stop was our final destination, a vacation house at Pililia, Rizal. The place was quiet and had a good view of Laguna de Bay. The plan was supposed to set-up a tent for sleeping but the room and bed of the vacation house are so comfortable that we skipped that plan and took advantage of the comfy beds. We spent the night reading our favorite books. The following morning, breakfast with a view of the Laguna de Bay was exhilarating and refreshing.

Winding roads to and from Tanay, Rizal - a cool alternative to Tagaytay or Baguio.
Back to Manila at 9:00 AM but first a stop-over for early lunch at Pico de Pino along the zig-zag roads at Baranggay Cuyambay.  Lunch of calamares, fish fillet and sinigang (again) with ice cream and coffee was lovely and relaxing. The place is popular among travelers because of its cool ambience and lovely huts.

Pico de Pino is a good stop-over to unwind and relax.
It was Good Friday and a visit at Ateneo's House of Jesu and a station of the cross at the Ateneo's ground was a fitting act to glorify our Lord.

Taal Heritage Tour

Welcome to Taal Heritage Town
Taal heritage town is one the Philippines undiscovered town that is rich in culture, food and heritage. I just discovered that there is such a place near Metro Manila which compares with Vigan where old and ancestral houses are well maintained and preserved giving the town that heritage and authentic environment.  During our one day visit at Taal we discovered the richness and beauty of our culture.

Our fist stop: Taal's Heritage Basilica

Taal Municipal Hall 1572

Taal's popular lomi is very sticky since it's cooked using casava flour. We love lomi but this version is very different and we're not used to the very sticky version. But the local folks love it!
Taal Imperial Hotel
Taal Imperial Hotel. Quiet & Comfy. A place to relax. But quite far from restos.

Taal's longganiza and tapa are not sweet, not salty - just right! The fried suman with chocolate was superb. We just love the food - so we bought take-home goodies!

The Photo Museum has collections of antique cameras and old photos of the owner who was a classmate of Dr. Jose Rizal. Entrance fee is P100 for adults and P50 for students.

Bulalo at Tanay, Rizal

This way to CK!
If you visit Tanay, Rizal make sure you drop by at Cafe Katerina (CK) to try their comfort food - simple and hot beef bulalo and their barbecue pork and chicken. Tanay, Rizal is an unexplored area with a view similar to Tagaytay (except for the volcano). You can see Laguna Lake and the new wind mills.

Zoobic Safari

Zoobic Safari by Geof

5 May 2013. Our summer trip to Subic inlcudes the Zoobic Safari. First, we saw a lot of birds and farm animals. Second, we took a train that brought us to the many sections of the zoo. The first stop was a close encounter with tigers. We went in a jeep and saw them up close. The handlers also fed them meat. The next stop, we saw where all the tigers were being held. For the third stop, we saw an Aeta dance ritual. Then we saw an exhibit of many animal skins and hides. Finally, we walked over a bridge overlooking a pond full of crocodiles. Even though it was hot that day, I still had a fun experience there.
